How Strong A Rod Will I Need To Catch 1-3 ft Koi & Carp?

I was at my local angling store and was looking at the poles. How do I know how strong the fish will be and strong the pole is?

right above the handle it will have writing on it. if it says MH that means medium to heavy fish. you would want H which means heavy. also you will want to chech the maximum line weight on the rod like 12-20 lbs for example. you want one that has the right amount of line weight that you need. the rod should be about 7′ long to about 8′. you want a rod that is tough, with a good back bone and bends and the tip of the rod. it will give you good control over the fish and flexible so it does not shatter in your face. really when telling how big the fish are, its kinda a guess. for fish that big i would get about 30 or 40 lbs line maybe even 50 just in case it takes you into the snags, assumong there are some. best of luck to ya!!!

That all depends on what you want. If you really want to have fun and enjoy it, get a lite /med. weight rod with 6 to 8 lbs. test line. Just make sure you have a good drag and have it set properly !! It will take you longer getting it in, But it is much more fun then dragging it in with a heavy outfit and 40 lb test line.

A 6 1/2 ft. to 7 ft. Medium Heavy Action. That will do nicely. I suggest 20 lb. braided line. And hold on tight.

    7′ MH.
